As researchers continue to study the impact of stress on the body, we’re learning more and more about how stress can be the root of many medical problems—even acid reflux. The “stress hormone” cortisol can interfere with proper digestion and weaken your immune system, which can make you more prone to acid reflux. Acid reflux (also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) can be very harmful and do long-term damage when left untreated. GERD can lead to problems with the esophagus, causing it to become inflamed and leading to scarring of the tissue. Over time, untreated acid reflux may lead to heart disease and esophageal cancer. Some sufferers may complain of a lingering cough, a burning sensation in the throat, an acid taste in the mouth, or nausea.
