For most people who are overweight or obese, losing weight is hard. It is so hard in fact that most people who were heavy as kids find that losing weight as an adult is nearly possible. Those who have struggled with weight throughout their entire lives are often experienced dieters familiar with everything from calorie counting to severe portion control to heavily restricted diets. But even after losing weight through dieting, many people gain it back—and some are even heavier than before. This experience of losing weight only to gain it back (and usually, with additional pounds) is commonly called the yo-yo effect as the scale drops only to go back up again.
