What is insulin resistance? In a nutshell, it’s when the body’s cells do not properly respond to insulin. Insulin is crucial to the body being able to metabolize blood glucose, and when this process is hampered, excess glucose can build up in the bloodstream and cause serious problems. The degree to which the cells respond to insulin is known as insulin sensitivity. When insulin resistance develops, the pancreas must produce more insulin than it is capable of doing. Unmanaged insulin resistance can lead to diabetes and other health problems. Once insulin resistance has progressed into diabetes, a strict diet must be followed, and sometimes, daily doses of insulin are needed. It’s safe to say that managing insulin resistance at the onset, or even better, preventing it, is crucial for wellbeing. But how do you maintain insulin sensitivity in the first place?
