According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 40 percent of Americans are obese, and 70.7 percent are either overweight or obese. That puts obesity at epidemic levels―the highest rates ever recorded in the United States. Those with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 25, which is considered normal weight for Americans, are now in the minority. Consequently, being at an unhealthy weight has now become the new normal. Obesity isn’t just a matter of appearance; it’s quite literally a matter of life and death. It puts people at high risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. You can chalk all those excess pounds up to an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, and sleep deprivation to a degree. But there’s another factor at play: unbalanced hormones―e.g., estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, HGH, and thyroid hormones―can be a major contributor to weight gain, especially during mid-life. Read more…
